NABA Mission

The mission of NABA, Inc. is to address the professional needs of its members and to build leaders that shape the future of the accounting and finance profession with an unfaltering commitment to inspire the same in their successors.

The Association shall unite through membership accountants, finance and business related professionals and students who have similar interests and ideals, are committed to professional and academic excellence, possess a sense of professional and civic responsibility, and are concerned with enhancing opportunities for minorities in the accounting, finance and business related professions. The goals of the Association include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To promote and develop the professional skills of our members
  • To encourage and assist minority students entering the accounting profession
  • To provide opportunities for members to fulfill their civic responsibilities
  • To promote public confidence in our members and the services they provide
  • To encourage cordial relations among members and cooperative relationships with other professionals
  • To represent the interests of current and prospective minority accounting professionals
  • To ensure long-term financial stability and provide adequate resources to implement chapter, regional, and national programs.

NABA RTP HISTORY

In 1993, twenty-four Black professionals met in Research Triangle Park (RTP) to discuss and act on bringing a National Association of Black Accountants Professional Chapter to the RTP, NC area. Among this group were several CPAs, CISAs, and CFEs.

This group of individuals wanted to provide for our area the same opportunities, services and experiences that many of them received as NABA student and professional members.  They acted on this desire by working diligently with local professionals, the National Office and Regional Officers to create a charter and by-laws needed to establish an RTP Professional Chapter.

This was realized on May 15, 1993 with the approval of our charter and by-laws by the National Board of Directors.  Since this time many of the members have gone on to write articles in various journals and magazines, sit on various professional boards, become national and international renowned authors and inspirational speakers, radio hosts, business owners and mentors.   Many of them are Lifetime NABA members, and lifetime supporters and spokespersons for NABA and the accounting profession.

Today, the efforts of the first twenty-four NABA members have resulted in a chapter that has grown nearly twice the size it was in 1993 and have assisted many young leaders and professionals in developing their leadership skills.  This chapter has also assisted local companies in meeting diversity goals and objectives.  The NABA RTP Chapter continues to remain a chapter dedicated to its student members; the motto of the original nine NABA founders, “Lifting as we climb”; and remains a top networking hub for area business professionals.

NABA History

In 1969, nine Black professionals met in New York City to discuss the unique challenges and limited opportunities they faced in the accounting profession. In that year, there were only 136 Black Certified Public Accountants out of a total of 100,000 in the United States of America.

This group wanted to establish an organization to address the concerns of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional and academic excellence. The nine persons who met that year were determined to make a difference and let their voices be heard.

NABA has established a wide range of programs specifically developed to assist accounting and finance professionals in achieving their career goals. Each program is a partnership with the individual member and the business/corporate community to ensure that skills developed will assist businesses in achieving their desired financial, operational and management results. NABA has a history of building business leaders.
